This is a very pretty five.
Well, I hope this isn’t a sign of things to come, but I’m betting this is a sign of things to come. Evidently Chase bank is testing a new $5-per-withdrawal ATM fee for non-customers in Illinois.
So if you’re not a Chase customer and you’d like to withdraw cash from a Chase ATM in Illinois, you’ll pay $5 for the privilege—plus any fees that your bank charges. That’s um, steep.
I know, I know—there are plenty of ways to get around paying ATM fees. I’ve written about them. But when you need cash, you need cash, so the chances are good that at some point, you’re going to need to use another bank’s ATM.
Maybe, for a while, you should steer clear of Chase bank’s.
Do you pay attention to ATM fees when you withdraw money?

I love the COOP network of credit unions. A credit union other than mine has an ATM about half a block away from my work building, which is perfect!

Yet another reason why I’m glad to have “broken up” with the big, bad, ugly C. I try to avoid ATM fees by getting cash back, even at times when I don’t need to buy something. I would rather put the extra bucks toward something I’m buying than nothing. Our smaller local bank is much better in a lot of ways, but I know I paid for a few more ATMs throughout the year because they don’t have locations all over. I’m still thinking about joining a credit union, especially given that fact that they have a ATMs close to my house and office.

I would agree thats steep.but i have one even worse. I chose to cash a chase check in the amount of $1,500 the other day and they told me that there would be a 2% fee. So I had to pay $30 to cash the check becuase i dodnt want to wait the 3-7 days it was going to take to clear the deposit.
To top it off they toldme to hold the receipt and they would credit me if I opened an accoun tat chase. I went to open the account, and they would not give me the credit.
Needless to say I did not open the checking account, which by the way of course has a fee. No free checking there. Nothing is Free at Chase

I’m always aware of ATM fees, and avoid them unless it’s an absolute emergency. My credit union (https://www.obee.com) is a member of one of those co-ops offering no fees at any member ATM, so there are plenty to choose from.

one of my biggest bug-a-boos is paying ATM fees. I hate getting stuck and having no other choice and avoid it at all costs, by planning ahead. Yes, I’ve been in a jam and had to cough up the fees and it drove me nuts for a few hours.
