Kate Ashford:
I’m a freelance journalist who writes about personal finance and health. Why? I find them interesting. I’m the girl who actually likes doing her taxes, and I’ve been known to stump the IRS with my questions. (Turns out that sometimes even they don’t understand their own rules.) I love tracking down a good deal, whether it’s a coupon code for free online shipping or the best savings account interest rate. I also like helping people do the right things with their finances, from building up an emergency fund to checking a credit report to writing a will. If I don’t have the answer, I’ll find out.

My background:
I’ve held staff positions at both Money and Good Housekeeping, where I covered insurance, travel and consumer trends. I’ve also held freelance positions at Kiplinger’s Personal Finance and Entertainment Weekly. I’ve appeared on CNN, ABC, CBS and local New York TV stations, as well as several radio shows. My freelance work has appeared in Money, More, Health, Women’s Health, Parade, Popular Science, Self, Glamour, Shape, Family Circle, and on MoneyWatch.com and RealSimple.com, among others. I was nominated for a Business Journalist of the Year Award in 2008.

I hold a bachelor’s degree in sociology from the University of Virginia (Wahoo-Wa) and a master’s degree in journalism from Northwestern University. I live in Westchester, New York with my husband and two daughters, who brighten my life every day.
